  • Andrea  - Suggestion : Always keep the knee flexed.
I write from Italy. I have received an identical subtalar dislocation in the ER. After mild narcosis, I asked my assistant (a male nurse) to put his hands behind the femur distal end to keep the knee flexed, while I carried out the reduction. This permitted me to obtain the reduction in a couple of seconds. Moreover, knee flexed avoids fracture complications...

Way to go Katie and Chris. Another teaching point - with enough ketamine you can do ANYTHING to a patient.

An orthopedist once taught me to bend the knee when you reduce an ankle dislocation--it takes the tension from the gastrocs out, and makes the reduction much easier. Probably why this ankle reduced once you dangled the leg over the side of the bed. I prefer to flex the hip and knee 90 degrees, and have someone pull counter-traction at the popliteal fossa.
